For as long as humans have driven automobiles, they've dreamed about the day that they could sit back, relax, and let their car take them wherever they'd like to go. Autonomous driving seems like the stuff of science fiction, but the day has finally arrived when we can trust our cars to take us safely where we'd like to go, no interaction required.
For now, this technology is limited to the parking lot, and Honda has joined a growing list of automakers who have developed driverless valet parking systems.
The automaker demonstrated this remarkable feature on some very special Honda Fit, which is already equipped with many incredible safety features that make it one of the most technology-laden vehicles at this price point. It boasts a rearview camera, which, when combined with additional computer features, allows the vehicle to park itself without human guidance.
The idea is that a driver would just have to drive to a specific vehicle drop off spot in a lot, and then allow the car to go find a spot and park itself. When the driver is finished with their task (perhaps doing some holiday shopping at the mall?), they can alert the vehicle and it would come pick them up.
The system has incredible potential, and we can't wait for the day that we don't have to spend time circling a parking lot, looking for a good spot to park. You can watch the Driverless Valet Parking System do its thing here: http://youtu.be/6MjmRDIVxws.
